Parathyroid gland secretes parathyroid hormone (PTH). It affect calcium metabolism in body. If PTH is decreased, serum Ca will be low. In case of hypocalcemia or tetany, one can search a parathyroid specialist doctor or best parathyroid doctor in varansi. In case of parathyroid adenoma or hypercalcemia or hyperparathyroidism (primary, secondary or tertiary), you have to consult parathyroid specialist doctor or best parathyroid doctor to your nearby.
What are Parathyroid Glands?
Parathyroid glands are four small glands of the endocrine system which regulate the
calcium in our bodies. Parathyroid glands are located in the neck behind the thyroid
gland. Parathyroid glands produce a hormone called Parathyroid Hormone (PTH). This
hormone controls the calcium levels in our blood, in our bones, and throughout our
body. Calcium is the most important element in our bodies, so calcium is regulated
more carefully than any other element. In fact, calcium is the only element with it's own
regulatory system i.e. parathyroid glands. Diseases related to parathyroid glands:
Mainly two types- Hypoparathyroidism and
hyperparathyroidism.
Hypoparathyroidism:
When production of PTH hormone by parathyroid glands is low
or absent. Because of low serum PTH, serum calcium is low and serum phosphorus is
high in these patients.
Hyperparathyroidism:
When production of PTH hormone by parathyroid glands is
high. Because of high serum PTH, serum calcium is usually high and serum phosphorus
is low in these patients. It is of mainly 3 types, primary, secondary & tertiary. Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT):
It is due to parathyroid adenoma, single or
multiple. It needs surgical excision of adenoma.
Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (SHPT):
It is due to renal failure, vitamin D deficiency
and malabsorption syndrome.
Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism:
It is in renal transplant patients
